It’s remarkable how much we can accumulate over a period of 12 months – from old brochures and fliers that we will never read, to reports that are gathering dust, miscellaneous paperwork and receipts scattered haphazardly across your cabinets – what better time to Spring clean but now?
A clean and organized work area is a productive one. Studies have shown that light, colours and artwork all play a part in employee satisfaction and productivity.
Tidy up all your documents
Peruse all your papers and documents and place the important ones to the side. Recycle or shred the rest. Organize all paperwork within binders or files, and place those that you most often access in close proximity to you. For example, all binders can go in your overhead storage compartment and all letter or legal files can be placed in a lateral file for hanging storage. All closed or not regularly accessed files can be placed in cardboard banker storage boxes, labeled, and placed in a discreet location in your workstation or stored offsite in a company storage facility. This will cut down the time it takes to search through tons of papers.
Wipe down and clean your desk
Your desk, mouse and keyboard is a breeding ground for bacteria, so it’s best to give it a good spray and wipe with disinfectant and keep anti-bacterial gel on your desk.
Add colour to brighten up your staff
Colour holds a crucial part in designing a workspace. Color creates a powerful emotional stimulus and your color choice can stimulate, energize, inspire, calm, soothe or focus your employees. For example, a light blue colour reminds people of a nice clear sky, hence giving them a sense of lightness, calmness and peacefulness – it are psychologically soothing and tend to create a quiet mood and encourage concentration. On the other hand, a bright red colour is associated with blood or a blazing fire, hence creating an energetic and aggressive feeling, and is best suited to areas where you want to minimize staff lingering, like nonproduction areas, entrances, corridors, lunch rooms, break areas and locker rooms.
Invest in an ergonomic chair
Many people sit in their chairs up to eight hours a day or more. It’s extremely important that you sit in an ergonomically correct chair that fits your body type and frame. Examine your current chair, and see that it meets current ergonomic standards. Make sure you know what features your chair has and how to adjust it to fit your body proportions. Lastly, your task chair needs to be comfortable and in proper working condition.
Consider technology
A larger screen monitor, cordless mouse, keyboard, or hands-free phone adapters can be extremely useful and give your workstation an appealing upgrade and create less clutter with the absence of cords.
